Ceram visualized archeology as a wonderful combination of high adventure, romance, history and scholarship, and this book, a chronicle of man's search for his past, reads like a dramatic narrative. We travel with Heinrich Schliemann as, defying the ridicule of the learned world, he.

This week I had the great pleasure of seeing one of my own books, The Mummy Congress, named on a fellow blogger’s list of the top 75 pop science books. This got me thinking about my own favorite reads on archaeology. This morning, I drew up a list of what I think are the five best novels (or trilogies!) ever written about the ancient past and/or archaeologists. Dr. Steven Ortiz is a biblical archaeologist with over 30 years of field experience and has traveled extensively throughout the Middle East. He is currently the co-director and principal investigator at Tel Gezer. His expertise is the use of archaeology to reconstruct the history of ancient Israel and the Second Temple Period (New Testament).

“She brought archaeology and ancient art to a whole new strata of society,” Carlos Picon, an antiquities expert who was curator of Greek and Roman art at the Met for 28 years, said in a phone.   Robinson is a hard science fiction author best known for his Mars trilogy, and this novel about a Soviet-dominated future Mars is a good companion to those later works. The novel tells the story in three parts of the way an uprising is represented by eyewitnesses, history and archaeology. (This could be the best novel on the list!).
